Hibernus #3

Fifty years after Jef Geys produced an edition portfolio within the framework of MASEREEL in 1972—inviting, among others, Marcel Broodthaers and Toon Tersas—MASEREEL initiated Hibernus in 2022 as a contemporary continuation of this historical gesture.
Every two years, four artists are invited to develop new work in MASEREEL’s extensive printmaking studio, supported by an artist’s fee. The proceeds contribute to the further development of MASEREEL’s artistic program.
At the invitation of MASEREEL director Stijn Maes, Carlotta Bailly-Borg, Sammy Baloji, Julien Meert, and Shervin/e Sheikh Rezaei have been creating new work in our studios since autumn 2025. The four solo projects premiered during the OPEN MASEREEL weekend (6–7 June 2026).
Just like the first two editions, Hibernus #3 deliberately moves away from the physical format and large edition size of the original portfolio. Instead, the focus shifts to autonomous artistic trajectories, with room for research and experimentation, and a curiosity about what does not yet exist.
The new does not emerge afterward, but grows from within the dark.

During the summer, the group exhibition Hibernus #3 will be on display on: 4 and 5 July, 11 and 12 July, 22 and 23 August, and 29 and 30 August (from 13:00 to 17:00 on each occasion).
