MASEREEL

Parallel to the realization of the new artist pavilion, the artist duo Daniel Dewar & Grégory Gicquel created a new, permanent outdoor sculpture within the framework of the Decreet Kunst in Opdracht.

The artists started from a simple agricultural object—a drinking trough—and transformed it into a monumental artwork, hand-carved from granite. From the same block of stone emerge a life-sized sheep and an oversized four-color BIC ballpoint pen. This unexpected, playful combination brings together different worlds: the sheep refers to an agrarian, pre-industrial context, while the ballpoint pen evokes printmaking, creation, and reproduction.

In an accessible way, the work opens up a reflection on how we engage today with labor, nature, and technology. Through the manual process and the chosen imagery, attention shifts to what often remains in the background.

On the MASEREEL site, the work will gradually blend into its surroundings, growing into a place that invites residents and visitors to reflect on labor, production, and artistic practice.
